Short answer: if two people share the computer, give each person their own user account on it. Each user then has their own ChatGPT app data and their own ~/.codex, so logins, chats and Codex threads stay apart, for free. If it's one person with several accounts, separate computer users are overkill; run the accounts side by side instead, which is what Sessions Pro for Codex does.
Free 1-hour preview once you've signed in to a profile. For macOS 14 or later, or Windows 10 or 11, with the ChatGPT desktop app.
What an account keeps on your computer
- The login. In the app's data folder, and for Codex in
~/.codex, which OpenAI says to treat like a password. - Codex threads. Local Codex sessions live in
~/.codex, alongside settings and MCP servers inconfig.toml. - One account, one person. OpenAI's sharing policy says an account is for the person who created it.
Two people: a computer user each
A separate user account per person is free and built in: System Settings → Users & Groups on a Mac, Settings → Accounts on Windows. Each user has their own home folder, so their own ChatGPT app data and their own ~/.codex, with nothing to set up.
- Both can stay signed in. Switch users instead of logging out, and the other person's apps keep running.
- Install per user on Windows. The ChatGPT app comes from the Microsoft Store, and Store apps are often installed for one user. If it's missing after you switch, install it from that user account.
- Real separation. Each person's chats, files and logins stay in their own home folder.
One person, several accounts?
If it's you with a work and a personal account, a second computer user means logging out of your whole desktop to switch (what that costs you). Faster: the account switcher on chatgpt.com, a second CODEX_HOME for the Codex CLI, or each account as its own app.
Several accounts, one person.
Sessions Pro for Codex is for that case: each of your ChatGPT accounts gets its own profile, its own app with its own Dock icon on a Mac or its own titled window on Windows, each with its own login, chats, Codex threads and Codex CLI, all open at once. For two different people, separate computer users are still the better and free answer.

FAQ
Can two people use ChatGPT on the same computer?
Yes. Give each person their own user account on the computer, and each gets their own ChatGPT app data and their own Codex folder automatically.
Can we share one ChatGPT account?
OpenAI's sharing policy says an account is meant for the person who created it, and anyone else should sign up for their own.
Is it allowed to use multiple ChatGPT accounts?
Sessions Pro for Codex runs the official ChatGPT app with accounts you already have, such as a work account and a personal one. It doesn't change how ChatGPT or Codex work, and OpenAI's terms apply to each account. Use it for accounts you're allowed to have, not to get around usage limits.
